☽
A unique Victorian crescent moon c clasp brooch made of seed pearls and sterling silver.
Can be converted into a pendant or worn as a brooch.
One of a kind and a truly magical, celestial treasure.
Symbolism ~
The crescent moon dates back to second millennium BC and is the oldest symbol known to man. It became most popular in jewellery in Georgian through Victorian times in brooches and then morphed into other styles such as pendants.
Crescent moons celebrate the feminine moon goddess and therefore are associated with female empowerment.
The crescent also symbolises change, as it turns into a full moon and then back, similar to the ebb and flow of life.
Victorian brides wore brooches with a crescent moon cradling a flower on their honeymoon.
These sweet styles are called ‘honeymoon brooches,’ said to represent ‘the magic of the moon and the sweet nectar of the flower.’
This brooch doesn’t have a flower but it could be "your something old” on your wedding day, you could pin it to your veil as the sweetest accent accessory, it could be pinned to your chest next to your heart, or even on your bouquet to honour this old tradition that is just so incredibly sweet and thoughtful.
The pearl is a symbol of perfection and incorruptibility; it is a symbol of long life and fertility, and because of its lustre it is often considered a Moon symbol. Buried within the oyster shell, the pearl represents hidden knowledge, and it is highly feminine. In Victorian times seed pearls were often used to symbolise tears.
If you would like us to convert the brooch into a pendant please contact us for further details or choose your style from the drop down menu.
The crescent moon can hang horizontally or vertically with the addition of tiny silver bails and a sterling silver necklace of approximately 40cm in length so that the moon will hang just at your collarbone. If you prefer a longer chain please contact us with your preferred length.
Hallmarks: "STERLING" written on the back of the brooch
One seed pearl protrudes slightly from its setting, I think perhaps it was glued back into place by a previous owner. This is not very noticeable when worn and doesn't detract from the beauty of the piece.
Please note that if the brooch is to be converted into a pendant the processing time will vary depending on availability in our workshop.
Generally the turnaround will be approximately 3 weeks before it is ready for shipping.
